Quality Over Quantity: Link Building Lives On

Don’t delete all your links yet! Google’s crackdown on links only reinforces their importance. The recent Penguin updates from Google have given link building a bad name but the last thing you should do is stop cultivating links to and from your site. Google is cracking down on links because links are essential to how the internet functions. By encouraging websites to improve link quality, Google hopes to improve user experience across the web as well.   What is Penguin? For those of you who aren’t familiar with Penguin, this is a Google search algorithm update that targets manipulative SEO practices. Some legitimate websites were adversely affected because of exact-match anchor text in their content (too many links on the site are attached to the same keywords), or a low quality link profile (their links come from low quality sites). These websites found their search engine rankings dropping and a noticeable decrease in web traffic and business. As a result, webmasters and SEOs have been a little wary of links ever since. However, that doesn’t mean you should stop building links. Without links, you wouldn’t be able to navigate from page to page. You wouldn’t be able to point your [...]

Technical Drawings for a New Restaurant

The Corner Creperie Who They Are The Corner Creperie is a new crepe shop opening in Downtown Pleasanton in the fall of 2013. Growing up in France, the owner has always loved crepes and felt that they were missing when he moved to the United States. Project Requirement: City code-compliant technical drawings detailing the proposed signage for the storefront, and social media pages. Downtown Pleasanton is a very charming area, partially because the city has strict rules about maintaining it. City code allows stores along Main Street one awning and blade sign each, a certain area of window signage, a choice from several pre-approved awning colors, etc. Our challenge was to create technical drawings that showed The Corner Creperie’s proposed awning, blade and window signs, while staying within the city’s building code requirements. These technical drawings must be submitted to the city for approval before The Corner Creperie can open shop. Furthermore, the owner is aware of the importance of social media, but unfamiliar with how to use the sites themselves. He needed a little help setting up profiles for his upcoming store. Solution: We carefully reviewed the city’s guidelines and studied examples of other technical drawings to create drawings [...]

How do you know if you want a website or a web application?

“Website” is an all-encompassing term that we use to refer to anything on the web we view through a web browser. However, websites have come a long way since the static informational pages of the ‘90s. Today, we use many “websites” that interact with us and perform tasks for us. Our favorite search engine, Google, is dynamic. Instead of letting us search through an index of topics, it takes our search queries and returns related websites. The contents of the page change depending on our input. Likewise, Amazon allows us to search for items, and then purchase them and leave reviews. Sites like these are viewed through a browser like websites, but they interact with us and do something for us. Because of the ever-changing nature of the web, a new term has evolved to describe these interactive websites. They are called web applications, or web apps. Web Applications Web applications are programs that run in web browsers depending on input from the user. Websites are static HTML pages that present users everywhere with the same set of pages and information. Next time you need a website, ask yourself if you are really looking for a website, a web app, [...]

Logo Revision to Improve Legibility and Usability

The Boxing Gym Who They Are In This Corner Boxing Gym is a boxing gym located in Santa Rosa, CA. They have been in business for several years but needed help updating some of their marketing materials. Project Requirement: Logo revision and business cards The circular shape of the logo and the placement of the text under it made it very difficult to read. They also required business cards to help promote their business and to share their contact details. Our challenge was to update the logo in order to ensure that it looked good as itself, but also to ensure that it would suit other print materials, such as these new business cards. Solution: We helped redesign the logo to better fit within the physical boundaries of print materials and also to improve the overall visual style of the logo. In our logo redesign, we extend the edges of the logo outward into a square. In addition, we changed the placement and size of the text to improve legibility. We redesigned and printed these business cards for the client.

Mobile App Prototype Web Programming Project

OpenWager Who Are They? OpenWager is a recent startup in the heart of San Francisco focusing on developing social games and entertainment platforms. The company develops a range of social casino games across social media applications and mobile games to allow casinos to better interact and engage with their visitors. The branded games help build loyalty, customer retention and are pioneering a path to real-money gaming. Project Requirement: Responsive website design as an iOS app prototype The client wanted to prototype their new casino app to showcase its functionality and to market it. They created a prototype on Proto.io, but discovered it did not have enough the usability that they were looking for. They approached 3-Key Communications with the request to build an app mockup using HTML and responsive design. Our Solution OpenWager provided us with their original designs which we translated into HTML code and a responsive website. We paid special attention to how each page would appear on iPhones and iPads as these are the devices that OpenWager will develop for first. Since the site was custom-coded by our programmers, we were able to include much more of the functionality they were looking for. This included images and text [...]

How A/B testing can eliminate the guesswork from your next ad campaign

Stop guessing with your money! Nobody likes second-guessing himself or herself, especially not when money and the success of your business are involved. Do you stay up late wondering if last year’s ad campaign would have done better if you offered a money back guarantee instead of free shipping? Would that banner on your website generate more sales if you went with the green button instead of the red? Instead of wondering, you can know for sure. Take the guesswork out of your next ad campaign or landing page with A/B testing. What is A/B Testing? A/B testing is a process of running performance tests on your websites to see which colors, offers, calls to action, etc. work the best. Instead of guessing and hoping, do a round of A/B testing to gather measurable data on which color scheme, headline, or offer generates the best conversion rates. For example, you can’t decide if a red or green “Buy Now” button would work better on your landing page. You would try the green button first for a set period of time and measure your results. Next, you would try the red button for the same period of time and see which [...]

How To Get Customers: Getting Traffic To Your Website

“Build it and they will come” is not a mantra that will grow your business. Having awesome products or services is one thing, but how do your potential customers know that you exist in the first place, let alone your products? Image by karlmfoxley @ Flickr Now you might be saying, “What do you mean, they don’t know about my business? I have established a business website that has answers every question my potential customers might have. My website even gets decent web traffic. Doesn’t that mean potential customers know about me?” Not necessarily. Does your website generate sales? Is your web traffic coming from potential customers who are looking for the exact product or service you provide and eager to do business with you? Or are these people who already know your business name from a networking event or referral? You might have a newsletter going out to a list of your potential customers with your website linked in it. Yes, that drives some traffic to your website, but doesn’t necessarily lead to sales. Since you already have the contact details for these potential customers, they are already in the loop about your business. However they got [...]
